The Minimal Closet

Do you have too many clothes, but nothing to wear?

The secret to always having what to wear is creating a minimalist wardrobe. How is this possible? By only investing in high quality basic clothing items with neutral colors that you can mix and match, and by keeping only what is necessary. It is clear that to create a minimal wardrobe you will need to get rid of a lot of clutter. But how can you choose what to donate and what to keep? It is very simple, Make 3 piles: A never wear pile, A maybe wear pile, and A love pile. Then focus your attention on the clothes you do not use: if you have not worn them for more than a year, then it is time to give them away, chances are you will never use them! Also, get rid of clothing that reminds you of unpleasant memories, clothing that no longer fit your style because it is changing, and clothing that you do not like or doesn't fit anymore.

How to start your minimal wardrobe:

Choose a color palette: We all have a favorite color, texture, fabric or patent. Choose the colors that you like the most or the ones that look good on you. To give you an example check the photo below for my color palette.

White, Black, Gray, Beige or Creme, Denim, Polkadots or Leopard & Lace

With a color palette in mind is easier to get rid of clothes that you will never wear. After choosing your color palette, it is time to organize your wardrobe.

How to organize your Warbrobe: 4 drawers are more than enough

Drawer 1:

Underwear and Socks: This drawer can be divided into 3 parts, a line for bras, one for panties and the other one for stockings or socks. How do you know how many of each garment to have? Here is an example from my minimal wardrobe:

- 2 Bras for daily use: 1 Black and 1 Nude. With these neutral colors you have the opportunity to multi-use.

- 2 Strapless Bras: Same colors as daily use

- 14 panties (doubling the days of a week, so you do not have to be washing so often)

- 14 Socks

Drawer 2:

T-shirts: Here you can have your spaghetti straps, tank tops & t-shirts. An ikea organizer is very effective: roll up the spaghetti straps for easy access.

Drawer 3:

Gym Clothing: Pants, sports shirts, sports long sleeves & sports bras. Organize in 3 sections, Rolling up the pants, folding the shirts and long sleeves and folding the sports bras in half.

Drawer 4: Sleepwear & night time socks

How to organize what is hanging in the closet:

Organize by colors and by categories in this order: (left to right inside your closet)

- Collar shirts (Short Sleeve)

- Collar shirts (Long Sleeve)

- Sweaters

- Long sleeve Shirts

- Jackets and Trench Coats

- Dresses

Pants, leggings & skirts: I fold them at the top part of the closet I do not like to hang them because they are very heavy for the hangers I use. The hats are hung inside the closet, and the shoes are placed in transparent plastic boxes to keep them clean.

When you are done, you will notice how easy, time saving and money saving this approach is since you will always find what to wear, you will always be able to mix and match to create new outfits each day and you will not have to spend tons of money on clothes.
