18th Street Art Center

Artists Catalogue

The 18th Street Arts Center (2014-15) Catalogue is a 100-page publication dedicated to a list of visiting and resident artists.

Most of the artists featured in the catalogue created site-specific work, as a response, we took direct visual cues from the topography of Santa Monica by using large scale maps, wayfinding signs, and navigational structures. Throughout the creative process, we experimented with shapes and meaning to create a system for guiding the viewer through the book the way physical spaces guide people through wayfinding. Each section was artistically crafted to have a unique and cohesive design approach that would complement and not compete with the art on display; we carefully curated the images throughout the publication.

This was a collaboration project part of _I Crop Collective.

Invitation / RSVP Card

VIP invitation for Theatricum Botanicum Fundraiser: “An Evening with Beau and Ezekiel Bridges Reading ‘Johnny Got His Gun’”

Trumbo’s book, “Johnny Got His Gun,” is a tale of an American Soldier from World War I who lost most of his body in an explosion but his mind kept intact, making him a prisoner of his own body. Our interpretation of the character’s turmoil and the dark recurring themes of memory and loss informed our creative direction. The stark contrast between the opposing forces of white and black values was used in the event collaterals to help elevate the story in both elegance and respect.

Logo Placement: The peace sign, taken from the book cover of the “Johnny Got His Gun” was broken apart in the front of the invitation conveying both the physical and mental rupture where the real effects of war collide. The invitation simultaneously presents the opportunity for the separate pieces to come together and form the peace sign, embodying the character’s newfound mission for promoting peace in the time of war.

Dirty Talk Art Exhibition

We facilitated the identity and design associated with the exhibition DIRTY TALK: Art / Environment / Action. We worked closely with the curators to develop a look that reflected both the activist nature of the theme as well as the eco friendly attitude.

Our work included the design and production of the invitation postcard, vinyl wall didactics, signage, matching info cards for each artwork, and a tabloid size handout that featured a duotone image.

Sick-Amour Lecture

Visual branding and marketing for the screening of Sick-Amour, part of a series of happenings by the USC Roski School of Art and Design focused on Art/Environment/Action. Our approach involved applying an overwhelmingly consistent green treatment throughout all collaterals to reflect the obsessive love expressed by the main character of the film towards an isolated tree in the middle of the concrete parking lot of the Rose Bowl.
